During his first term, Ma opened direct transportation routes, loosened travel restrictions and signed a free-trade agreement with mainland China. The economy will be Ma's top priority after Taiwan reported quarterly contractions in growth for the final two quarters of 2011. The election results offered an endorsement for Ma's stewardship through the financial crisis in 2007-2008 and his efforts to strengthen economic ties between Taiwan and mainland China, which still claims Taiwan as a renegade province.
