I know I'm gonna get attacked for that, but it's what I hear you might not hear it, but I do. I usually listen to recent live stuff anyways, because I just prefer that sound (vocals and drums are the big factors for me). I don't like the production of the older stuff as much because the drums don't seem as powerful. The drums are so clear on Death Magnetic. I think DM's tightness made sense for the album as well. That's one of the most iconic snare diddles you will hear. Sad But True absolutely needed that huge snare drum sound. I have to think about how the production fits the music. After Lars switched to coated heads, that gave the toms more attack, and it's easier for me to hear the individual hits on the toms. I think the more upfront sound makes everything more clear and distinguishable.
